MANILA – The Southern Police District (SPD) has again warned motorists against the rising number of robbery incidents involving street kids or “batang hamog.â€
Last year, a total of 20 cases of robbery were reported along C5 road, but in mid-2013, 31 cases have already been reported.
“Sa statistics natin, makikita natin na mayroong pagtaas ng incidents ng theft sa area na ‘yan. Mas maraming tao ang nagpupunta doon, mas maraming opportunities for ‘yung mga snatchers na ‘yan gumawa ng theft,†said Chief Supt. Jose Erwin Villacorte, SPD director.
Police said critical areas are Sampaguita St., C5 mini park, Sta. Maria St., and the elevated U-turn slot in Kalayaan.
The street kids usually open doors of vehicles stuck in traffic or reach inside open windows and rob valuables inside the vehicle.
Aside from Taguig, police are also monitoring teenagers aged 17 years old and above in Barangay Pembo, Makati.
On Thursday, an 18-year-old girl identified as Chona Abaya robbed a home in Bougainvilla St. Police said the suspect asked for food from the homeowner, and raided a room when the homeowner was not looking.
The teen suspect was also caught on camera hanging out with a group of “batang hamog†along C5.
A task force has been formed by several barangays in Makati and Taguig, SPD, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Bonifacio Global City and Ayala security to arrest the minors.
Authorities are reminding motorists passing C5 to always keep the doors of their vehicles locked, and avoid opening the windows.
