2nd Philippine Social Media Day Celebration

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will be holding its second social media day on the weekend of June 29, celebrating a facet of Filipino Internet life that has permeated aspects such as politics, disaster relief, and governance, with a theme revolving around using social media “for social good.”

The main gathering of social media users and enthusiasts will take place at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City the whole day of Saturday, but will spill over on Sunday in various social media day meetups across the country, particularly in Baguio, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, and Davao.

The central theme, “Let’s move #fwdPH,” is a call for Filipino netizens to “maximize our personal and collective social media capital for social change,” the organizers Tweetup Manila said.

“Let’s move #fwdPH” means being a good citizen both online and offline. Being responsible. Being vocal. Taking a stand on issues. Exposing corruption and incompetence. Making politics work for the country, especially the voiceless, poor and marginalized. And using social media to help achieve these,” the group said.

Aside from a day-long exhibit of social media highlights the past year, a set of speakers will also be in attendance to talk about the relevance of social media in the offline and everyday lives of Filipinos.

The group is expecting a bigger crowd to attend Saturday’s celebration compared with the first-ever Social Media Day held last year, which drew over 500 netizens, social media users and personalities to discuss and share insights about the important role that social media played in nation-building, particularly during times of disasters and calamities.

Known as the “social media capital of the world,” the Philippines is home to more than 40 million Facebook and Twitter users, making it one of the largest social media markets in the world.

Over 27 million Filipinos regularly log in to Facebook while a couple of million have made Twitter a popular go-to site for trends, news and information. Since 2008, Filipino netizens have led the world in video and photo uploads to various social networking sites.

Today, social media has made inroads in advertising, marketing, public relations, governance and politics, advocacies and causes, journalism and media.

Just recently, data from GlobalWebIndex revealed that the Philippines is also the top country in terms of Tumblr usage, comprising 8 percent of the total users in all of Asia, dwarfing Indonesia and Singapore, which ranked second and third, respectively.

Social Media Day is held annually to recognize the massive digital revolution that’s rocking the world today and sets out to bring together netizens across the nation, Tweetup Manila said. The annual occasion was started by technology blog Mashable in 2010, and has since spread across more than 300 cities around the world.
