as long as you have the Cloud/iCloud storage you simply can connect all your device so you wont have to worry about file transfer in the future

sony owns originally but to market it, sony needs partners therefore sharing the profit of blu-rays and sony get huge profits in creating disk some get profits on the design some will get profits for making players 

like Facebook the creator owns it in his college days  but law he owns a share to his creation not whole
