The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) has suspended its hugely popular "Pugad Baboy" comic strip, after it reportedly offended an exclusive Catholic girls school with a joke about lesbian students, and perhaps lesbian nuns.
The Inquirer says "Pugad Baboy" will not appear in its pages pending an internal investigation by its readers' advocate. The newspaper reportedly received a complaint from St. Scholastica's College in Manila, which was the subject of the comic strip in question.
Medina himself acknowledged in a Facebook post that he had been "fired". In a subsequent post on Thursday, the cartoonist said: "What? Wait... hindi pa pala ako fired. Suspended lang hanggang magkaroon ng consensus na sipain ako. Pero...doon din siguro ang punta no'n. Sigh."
"If you zoom in on that particular strip that got me fired, you'll see that the strip first appeared in MARCH. No reaction then. It was reissued after i made a series of anti-marcos strips, then BOOM! nag-trending sa twitter. interesting. I smell a consPIGracy..." Medina said in his Facebook page.
Fans and concerned netizens on Thursday were quick to launch an online petition urging the Philippine Daily Inquirer to keep Medina and "Pugad Baboy" - and threatening the paper with a boycott should the cartoonist be given the boot.
A petition titled, "Philippine Daily Inquirer: Do not fire Pol Medina, do not remove Pugad Baboy" is currently active on Change.org.

I don't think ilalaglag siya ng PDI ng ganun lang. As a newspaper, pinangangalagaan din ng PDI ung pangalan nila so kailangan nilang magpakita ng move to reprimand Mr Medina. Dahil maprinsipyo rin siya, most likely nagkasagutan yan with the editor kaya iniisip nyang tatanggalin na siya.

mali si PMJ dun na nag name drop sha , pero uber sensitive naman ng St.Scho na porkit sa Comic strip eh ipapaganun nila. Di ba pwedeng dahil sa comic strip na yun eh mamulat yung mata nila sa ngyayari? March nilabas ang strip then june nag file ng kaso. Magpapasukan na raw kasi laffman::

To add, sa tingin ko ang issue eh walang issue ang St. Scho.
Kung si Charice ang binanggit nya, ma-ju-justify pa nya na current issue yun kasi nasa news si Charice.
Yung St. Scho, san galing yun? Kaya parang lumalabas eh spite o attack sya sa institution. Whether what he said is true or not, is not my place to judge.
For him to insinuate that the outrage is related to his critical comments on the Marcoses is probably not the best move. Maybe not all, but surely a majority of Saint Scholastica alumni, teachers, admin and students are genuinely angry and offended. For him to suggest it's otherwise will just make them angrier. :(

Yung Charice po, ako lang nagsabi. It's my personal opinion kasi the strip actually came out in March. Pero mukhang npublish uli dahil napag-usapan ang lesbianism. Those who follow PB will notice na madalas magrepublish ng strips na related sa current events. Sorry for the confusion.

pero overreaction pa din. hindi kasi sanay ang mga pinoy at ang mga katolikong relihiyoso na ma-criticize kaya balat-sibuyas.
kung ako kay pmjr, hindi ako magso-sorry. satire naman ang pugad baboy. hindi ko lang inasahan na ganoon din reaction ng pdi. parang walang journalistic integrity.
antagal nilang pinabayaan si pmjr kahit na matindi ang banat sa mga pulitiko, ngayong clergy at sekswalidad ang topic, biglang bawi. tsk.

Personally, I don't think Pol Medina, Jr. should've named a specific school -- especially not that specific school. Does he know how hard it is for two girls to come out as an official couple in St. Scholastica's or--for that matter--St. Paul's (especially now that Fr. James Reuter is gone)?

'Pugad Baboy' creator Pol Medina Jr resigns from Inquirer
Pol Medina Jr., creator of the hugely popular 'Pugad Baboy' comic strip, has resigned from the Philippine Daily Inquirer effective June 7, the cartoonist confirmed to InterAksyon.com on Saturday.
Medina's resignation letter, a copy of which was furnished InterAksyon.com, was addressed to PDI editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc and read simply: "Ma'am, sorry I dishonored you. I resign."
Medina said his resignation was "irrevocable". It was triggered by his suspension earlier this week over a comic strip that touched on the topic of lesbianism in St. Scholastica's College, Manila. The administrators of the exclusive Catholic girls' school took offense at "being singled out", and for the suggestion that many of its students, and perhaps some of its religious leaders, were lesbians.
St. Scholastica's had threatened the Inquirer with a lawsuit should it fail to act on its "protest". On Thursday Inquirer publisher Raul Pangalangan issued a public apology and confirmed reports that Medina had been suspended "pending an investigation" by the paper's readers' advocate. The cartoonist followed up with his own apology on all television networks, then submitted his resignation on Friday evening.
Medina's departure from the Inquirer would end practically a quarter-century of mutually beneficial relationship between the artist and the paper. "Pugad Baboy's" daily publication on the Inquirer had made the artist a celebrity with mainstream following, and he had published consistently successful compilations of his works over the past two decades. At the same time, the comic strip, built around a community of overweight characters, was a genuine draw to the Inquirer, and arguably helped it attract a community of young, loyal readers.
