UFC champ Georges St-Pierre may retire after November fight
« on: October 13, 2013, 10:29:27 pm »
On Nov. 16, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his belt against Johny Hendricks. According to GSP’s head coach, Firas Zahabi, the champ is hungry and motivated right now but there is no guarantee that he will be back for more after this next fight.
“It takes a special mind to do MMA,” Zahabi said in a recent interview.

“We need to train every day, do not go out and do not do things you love. Train all day long. It is not easy. It’s really something.”
The TriStar coach says that St. Pierre has yet to determine if he’ll be interested in going through all that again after the Hendricks fight. If the French Canadian does not feel the same desire to sacrifice and train hard, Zahabi says St. Pierre will retire after the next fight.

“Georges told me…if he still has the motivation for another training camp, he will continue. Otherwise, he will retire,” Zahabi said.

“Motivation is the most important thing. When you do not have it, you have nothing. Georges is motivated for this camp. He’s trained well.”

Georges St-Pierre Trainer Taken Out of Context, Says the UFC Champ is Not Retiring

Reports of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s pending retirement are greatly exaggerated.

Or so his trainer, Firas Zahabi told UFC Tonight.

Zahabi recently did an interview in French, and many in the MMA world took the translation out of context, crediting the trainer with saying that if St-Pierre couldn’t find motivation for training that he would retire. The insinuation was that St-Pierre didn’t have the fire to train like he felt necessary to remain competitive, so that he would be done following his fight with Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November.

Zahabi did indeed say, and St-Pierre himself has often said, that if the desire to train was not there, if he lost his drive, then it would indeed be best if he hung up his gloves.

The trainer, however, did not say that St-Pierre currently finds himself in that situation. If fact, it’s just the opposite.

Zahabi told UFC Tonight reporter Ariel Helwani that this has been St-Pierre’s best camp in years, he is 100-percent focused on Hendricks, and he is not at all talking about any sort of exit strategy following the fight.
