Corporate greed and power

The news that the effective shelf life of cell phone loads bought from telcos will be longer is more than welcome. I will not dwell on the details since most major dailies are placing these on their front pages but suffice it to "blog" that it takes the power and influence not to mention the initiative of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile to make this possible. How many ordinary Filipinos have griped on this greed for so long? Were they listened to by the telcos? Not a pip was heard although a few have dedicated web pages to cater to the gripes and rants of millions of prepaid and postpaid cell phone users.

As a student of management and power, I can only marvel at the leverage of power, influence and status of the Senate to compel the nearly moribund NTC to issue a memorandum circular aiming to regulate and in effect tempering corporate greed.

Communication and the control of facilities are central to any development effort. With hundred of islands to connect, not to mention those appearing only a low tides, SMS and similar technology are truly vital to daily life.

Some questions though linger: Must malfeasance be personally experienced by our senators before they take the proper action? Do they have the aptitude and the capability to muster proactive rather than reactive muscle to tackle pressing problems of the nation?
